What can be done to improve our community so that it becomes the best-possible environment for raising our children?” This is the question parents are asked to answer when they decide to become involved in the La Voix des parents process.
This local initiative, which is based on appreciation and participation, was implemented by Avenir d’enfants in an effort to foster collaboration between organizations, the community and parents with children aged 0 to 5, including those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Parents have a distinct expertise. The La Voix des parents process analyzes the community by drawing on parents’ knowledge about their children. In addition to the parents’ reality and experience being recognized, this also serves to enrich their partners’ perspectives. As a result, small and large changes have been made in the respective communities.
In order to encourage the participation of parents and make their voices heard, partners frequently resort to measures such as organizing discussion groups, carrying out surveys or extending invitations to meetings. By securing a place for parents alongside the partners, this constitutes an empowerment approach.
Become involved as a partner, hire a facilitator and recruit ten parents.
Reflect on the question: “What can be done to improve our community so that it becomes the best-possible environment for raising our children?”
Consult numerous families in the community and establish the working group’s priorities.
Share the results and collaborate with the partners and the community.
La Voix des parents is a research-action project developed in 2008 by a team composed of Liesette Brunson, Ph.D., and Geneviève Boileau, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and several professionals working for Québec Enfants and the Centre 1,2,3 GO!. La Voix des parents is currently supported by Avenir d’enfants. Since 2009, the process has been carried out 80 times throughout Québec.

The measures and initiatives that have resulted from La Voix des parents tend to relate to parenting support, parent empowerment, information access, and recreational activities for families. Over 125 such initiatives and measures have been identified to date.
The project started in September of 2013 and is still going under a new form. The goal is to encourage and involve parents within the community to identify needs and strengths in their areas as they pertain to physical, social and psychosocial development and well-being of young children and families.
