What are the realities faced by parents living in underprivileged circumstances?
The Perspectives parents initiative defines parents living in underprivileged circumstances as those living in low-income households or who consider their incomes inadequate for meeting the basic needs of their families (housing, food, and clothing).
Compared to more affluent parents, parents living in underprivileged circumstances report higher rates of consultingprofessionals or social workers and using support services (e.g. drop-in daycare centres). However, smaller numbers of them participate in parent-child activities and sports activities.
It is interesting to note that parents who feel their incomes are inadequate experience higher stress levels and are under more self-imposed pressure than parents living in low-income households.
