Journey into the heart of a large collective movement in support of early childhood development in Québec.
Establishing connections, breaking isolation, and getting everyone to work together with the families—this is the great challenge the partners talk about in this touching episode. Each in their own way, they encourage us to take the time to listen and act together in a spirit of respect for the needs of children and their families.
What now? Armed with a collective project involving over 3000 partners able to tap into a wealth of accomplished learning about collective endeavours, early intervention, and supporting families, where do we go from there? In 2019, the Communauté de Manawan opened the Centre Mihawoso—a social pediatrics centre, the first of its kind in a First Nations community not covered by an agreement, and, along with the social pediatrics centre in Kujjurappik, Nunavik, only the second one located in an Aboriginal community.
Set up in 2015 by members of the community, with the support of the Conseil des Atikamekw de Manawan and the community’s service institutions, the purpose of the Centre Mihawoso is to offer children, youth, and families a social medicine service based on the fundamental rights model first introduced by Dr. Gilles Julien in Montréal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood.
The Centre Mihawoso offers clinical services and community activities for children, youth, and families, in keeping with Atikamekw values and culture. The Centre was set up as part of the community’s mother-and-child centre.

Step By Step (SBS) is an inclusive early childhood education child and family centre open to all children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. At Step By Step every child belongs and we celebrate their gifts while respecting the challenges which are unique to every child and family.
With the support of Avenir d’enfants, SBS has for over 10 years provided an intentional and intense focus on supporting staff and families in developing their awareness of the importance of positive attachment. The journey has included the delivery of parenting and professional programs which address an understanding of the impact of multi-generational and historical trauma experiences on current ways of being in relationship with both children and adults. This long-term effort has led to the building of capacity to provide children and families in our care with safe and secure attachment relationships and to strengthen the social-emotional environment of the work place, the home and the community.
